MCB Introduction:
MCB Bank Limited is a highly regarded
Pakistani multinational commercial bank, headquartered in Lahore, Punjab,
Pakistan. With a widespread network of 1,551 branches throughout Pakistan, the
bank has a significant presence in the region. The bank's shares are
predominantly held by the Nishat Group, a Pakistani company, and the Malaysian
bank, Maybank.
MCB Bank was established in 1947 by
the Adam G Group to provide banking services to the South Asian business
community. However, the bank was later nationalized in 1974 during the regime
of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. In 1991, it became the first bank to be privatized in
Pakistan and was acquired by a consortium of Pakistani corporate groups led by
Nishat Group. Since June 2008, Nishat Group has been the majority stakeholder
in the bank. Shoaib Mumtaz is the current President of the bank.
Mian Muhammad, the chairman of both
Mansha Group and MCB, oversees the group's diverse business sectors in
Pakistan, such as banking, textiles, cement, and insurance. The bank has also
established an Islamic banking unit to offer Shariah-compliant products and
services, with specialized Islamic banking branches located in six cities.
To expand its operations in international markets, the bank's management changed its name in 2005 from Muslim Commercial Bank Limited to MCB Bank Limited. However, the bank faced obstacles in obtaining licenses, particularly from Western countries, due to the term "Muslim." In 2008, the bank shifted its head office from MCB Tower in Karachi to MCB House, a newly constructed building located on Ghous-ul-Azam Street, popularly known as Jail Road, in Lahore.
